Accessibility for Mini/Engagement Sessions
Did you know one in four people in the U.S. are living a disability? Interestingly enough, that percentage is also highest in the South. With this in mind, ABP has always been focused on inclusivity of all kinds. Here’s just a little guide of things to think of for some of the Mini sessions, or even an engagement session with your S.O.!
Pick a familiar venue
Maybe you need somewhere close to your home, or maybe you just need somewhere you know the layout! There are some great accessible options in Memphis (and far beyond), so even if your photographer has a few ideas on locale, you can always mention your favorite spots! Then, they can work with you on the best places to do your shoot. If it’s a pre-determined location, like for Fall or Spring Minis, just be sure to look up the area ahead of time or call them about accessibility options!
Find poses that work for you
Do you need to sit more often? Are you wanting to make sure no mobility or medical aids are in the shot? (Alternatively, you may also want them in the shot!) Did you see something cute on Pinterest you want to try out? The main thing about your session is that YOU are authentically captured and comfortable! Not everyone wants the same poses anyway, so look up some inspo to talk to your photographer about.
Don’t forget necessities
Look, Memphis weather is SO fickle. We’ve got to account for everything, but if you have health issues, you definitely pack for all the scenarios. Depending how long your session is, you should make sure you have all you need! Snacks, drinks, anything that helps your body feel its best.
Wear comfortable clothing
If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that comfy can look cute! And there are a lot of accessible clothing lines now, some even at Target and Aerie. The main takeaway from your photos is that you want to present your best self to the world. That doesn’t always mean new, starchy, uncomfortable clothing!
Talk to your photog ahead of time
For the photographer, getting to know couples on a personal basis is one of the best parts of the job. Never be afraid to say what you need, what you’re worried about, or what you want out of the session. You’re never required to divulge ANY information. Even just mentioning you have health issues and you want something done a certain way is enough to go by!
The photographer is there to make sure you’re having a good time and that you look and feel your best. There is never any pressure to be someone else during your session. In fact, we strongly advise against it! Don’t ever hesitate to lay your boundaries out at the start, because YOU deserve to be happy with your session and photos.
